Girl Scouts Awarded Community Connectors Grant

Macedonia, OH –Girl Scouts of North East Ohio (GSNEO) received $32,150 from the Ohio Department of Education’s Community Connectors Program.  The Community Connectors Program gives Ohio students access to role models who can help motivate and inspire them and help them develop skills that lead to success in school and the workplace.  Girls who attend middle school in either South Central Local Schools in Greenwich, Ohio or East Liverpool City Schools in East Liverpool, Ohio may participate in the free program offered by GSNEO this fall and spring 2018.

Girls who participate in this program will become Girl Scout members and embrace their inner G.I.R.L. (Go-Getter, Innovator, Risk-Taker, Leader), ™ while planning for their future.   The G.I.R.L. Leadership Program connects girls in grades 6-8 with women in their community who will mentor them on self-esteem, community engagement, college, and careers.  Girls will also have the opportunity to take field trips and participate in after-school activities, including a day of teambuilding at Girl Scout Camp.

“When it comes to a girl’s future, anything is possible,” said Kim Klima, Director of Volunteer Support and Services, Girl Scouts of North East Ohio.  “That said, being told she can do or be anything she chooses will only take her so far – she’ll need strong leadership skills, mentors who inspire possibility thinking, and hands-on life experiences to take on the world with confidence.  This partnership is an investment in girls, the female leadership pipeline, and local communities.”

GSNEO has secured a number of speakers but is in need of mentors for the program in a variety of careers. Mentors will be women from the community who can offer advice and guidance to mentees, one-on-one, twice a month. Mentors get the chance to inspire these young women to embrace their potential.

To become a mentor, please contact the Community Membership Executive (CME) in your area: Jennae Rogers, CME – Columbiana County, 330-989-7011 or jrogers@gsneo.org or Kathryn Carpenter, CME – Huron County, 800-852-4474 ext. 6241 or kcarpenter@gsneo.org.

The Community Connectors grant was designed to bring together parents, non-profit community organizations, faith- or values- based entities, businesses, and other stakeholders to support Ohio’s schools through the development of a statewide mentoring program for students in grades 5-12 from eligible school districts. This grant program is entering its third year of engaging partner organizations in one-to-one mentoring programs that directly support at-risk students throughout Ohio. Nearly 200 organizations applied for the grant, requesting nearly $18 million in funding for the $10 million allotted.
