Girl Scouts is grateful for support during the centennial cookie sale

Macedonia, OH – Girl Scouts of North East Ohio (GSNEO) experienced a 6% increase in sales for the 2017 cookie season, thanks to cookie customers throughout the 18-county council.  The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girl-led business in the country, a century in the making, and supported by customers who believe in the Girl Scout mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

In Northeast Ohio, Thin Mints proved once again to have the most loyal following, accounting for 26.4% of all sales, while Samoas with their chewy caramel and coconut topping came in second at 18%.  Overall, there was an increase in sales by 166,380 packages, up from the 2.6 million sold in 2016. The Digital Cookie™ platform also experienced a spike in sales, up an amazing 80% from last year – accounting for a total of 115,452 sales.

To celebrate 100 years of girls selling Girl Scout Cookies, a new S’mores cookie was introduced in limited quantities. The S’mores cookies were a big hit this year and we look forward to selling them again next year.

Perhaps the most incredible increase of the 2017 Girl Scout Cookie sale was the number of cookies generously purchased from Girl Scouts participating in Operation: Sweet Appreciation.  This year, 55,920 packages will be delivered to members of the military – the most ever donated by Northeast Ohio cookie customers.

“Participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Program helps girls learn skills they need to become successful adults who will contribute to their communities and eventually the workforce,” said GSNEO Chief Executive Officer Jane Christyson. “Long before they assume adult roles, the Girl Scout Cookie Program allows girls real-world opportunities to manage money, become ethical and reliable entrepreneurs, set goals, meet deadlines, work well with others, and understand customers.”

Not only did girls learn important skills, they had fun selling cookies online using their individual cookie sites, practicing their sales pitch for in-person sales, and decorating their cookie booths set up throughout the community. This year’s top seller from Girl Scouts of North East Ohio was Samantha Jarvis, from Salem, Ohio who sold an incredible 3,035 packages!

The Girl Scout Cookie season has come to an end, but the money earned through the sale will continue to support local Girl Scout programming, troops, and their communities through their girls’ chosen service projects.
