National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend Recognizes the Largest Girl-Led Business in the Country

Girl Scout Cookie Weekend

MACEDONIA, OHIO – A century ago, a group of innovative girls started what would become a national tradition: Girl Scout Cookies. This year commemorates the first known sale of Girl Scout Cookies in 1917 as well as the largest girl-led business it is today here in Northeast Ohio and throughout the country.

The 45,000 girl and adult members of Girl Scouts of North East Ohio (GSNEO) will join all Girl Scouts, past and present, in recognizing National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend, February 24-26, 2017, by celebrating all the fun, learning, and excitement Girl Scouts have experienced selling cookies for 100 years. The Girl Scout Cookie Program teaches five essential skills for leadership, success, and life: decision making, goal setting, people skills, money management, and business ethics.

National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend gives girls the opportunity to talk about their goals and showcase their cookie selling skills. From January through April 2, 2017, Girl Scouts across Northeast Ohio are selling cookies at booths, door to door, and through Digital Cookie, the first national digital platform that enables girls to learn 21st-century skills while selling cookies through their own personalized cookie websites, or face-to-face using a mobile transaction app.

“From camping, to travel, to community service projects and Girl Scout programming – all of the amazing experiences girls have in Girl Scouting are powered by the cookie program,” said Jane Christyson, CEO of GSNEO.  “Girls have fun while also learning entrepreneurial skills and developing a lifelong sense of responsibility that creates leaders.  At GSNEO, we’re excited to recognize the hard work the girls put into this program.”
