On October 23, nearly 350 people tested their palates with unique, one-of-a-kind desserts made using Girl Scout Cookies. The desserts were prepared and served by the area's most talented chefs at "Dessert First," the 15th annual Girl Scouts of North East Ohio (GSNEO) gala fundraising event held at Sheraton Suites Cuyahoga Falls.
"This is one night when our supporters and the community have the opportunity to enjoy life's simple pleasures and, true to its name, featured desserts before dinner," said GSNEO Chief Executive Officer Daisy Alford-Smith, Ph.D. "Since the inception of Dessert First, this has been our most successful event, in terms of raising money to provide program opportunities to 40,000 Girl Scouts in Northeast Ohio."
Proceeds from the fundraiser help to further the Girl Scout's mission to provide programs that will build girls of courage confidence and character who make the world a better. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience is a comprehensive initiative that includes programming in the following six focus areas: Financial Literacy; Community Engagement; the Arts; STEM programs that utilize Science, Technology, Engineering and Math; Environmental Education; and Healthy Living. Over the past membership year, 28,000 more girls participated in all types of programs, which is a 75% increase from 2009. As a result, GSNEO is helping today's girls become tomorrow’s leaders.
This year's Dessert First event featured innovative desserts created and donated by eleven local restaurants. The First Place People's Choice Award went to West Side Bakery Pastry Chef Maureen Michael for her Samoa Mousse Dessert. Other award winning desserts from the night were created by The Galaxy, Blue Canyon, LockKeepers, Piatto Novo, and Edgar's Restaurant.
Judging was done by WEWS News Anchor Kimberly Gill, who also emceed the event; Radio Host Stan Piatt (WNIR); Reporter Amanda Barren (WKYC); Program Director and Radio Host T.K. O'Grady (WONE); Editor Georgina Carson (Akron Life & Leisure); and Food and Restaurant Editor Joseph Crea (The Plain Dealer) who voted for their favorites.
