Troop 544 created a Christmas tree with decorations made entirely of last year's holiday greeting cards. The 6 ½-foot-tall tree, Christmas Greetings (Again) from Girl Scouts, is on display at the Akron Children’s Hospital Festival of Trees.
The decorations include spheres, cutouts, paper lanterns, flower shapes, snowflakes, fans, 3-D shapes (stars, trees, snow men) and paper garland – all created from Christmas cards the 16-member troop collected from area families. The tree-topper is an angel formed from Christmas cards and the tree skirt is also fashioned from cards.
Troop members, along with their families, have been working on the ornaments since October said Troop Leader Ty Lee. “The girls were excited to learn that our tree won one of the festival awards, the Youth Award,” Lee said. This is the second year the troop has created a tree for the hospital event.
The Festival of Trees features more than 300 trees decorated and donated by local businesses and community groups. Sales of displayed trees benefit the hospital. The festival, which runs from Nov 20-28, is held at the John. S. Knight Center in Akron.
More than 60 Girl Scout Troops created handmade cards for the children at Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital. Due to the overwhelming response, some of the 2,000 Holiday Greetings were delivered to other local hospitals, including Akron Children's (Boardman and Akron). Cards will be delivered to CCCH in Shaker Hts. on Tuesday. Hospital volunteers will deliver cards to patients at the main campus in time for Christmas.
Hospitality volunteers at Akron Children's Hospital in Boardman accepted over 100 Christmas cards and small gifts from members of Brownie troop 80346. Sarah, Naomi, Sarah and their leader delivered these cards and small gifts that will be distributed to the children who will be in the hospital on Christmas Day. Troop 80346 is comprised of home schooled girls in Salem. Some of the cards were created by different troops across Northeast Ohio.
