Macedonia, OH – The jump to college can be stressful. Girl Scouts of North East Ohio (GSNEO) is making the transition easier by exposing high school girls to college life, financial aid, and careers in the sciences. Through a continued partnership with Kent State University (KSU), girls in grades 9-12 (Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts) will participate in a college preview on Saturday, November 6, 2010, followed by a FREE sporting event.
The “Sneak-a-Peek” day will focus on career choices in chemistry and biology. Girl Scouts will also meet female faculty members and Kent State students who will answer questions and serve as tour guides, visiting campus departments and facilities, such as the 3-D Imaging and Visualization Center.
First, Heather Adams, Director of the Women's Center, will share with Girl Scouts the value and need for young women to focus on their dreams and realize their potential. Then, Girl Scouts will get a sneak peek at the science of life! Careers in biology include biotechnology, zoology, water and land conservation, and molecular biology fields. Girl Scouts will also discover how chemical reactions affect the world around us as they explore chemistry majors, including biochemistry, inorganic and organic chemistry, research opportunities, and the NEOCOP (Northeastern Ohio College of Pharmacy) pharmacy partnership.
A college tour would not be complete without a sneak peek at the fun on campus! Girl Scouts will meet the women's basketball team at a lunch tailgate party before attending the Temple University vs. Kent State football game at Dix Stadium.
This program costs $5 and is coordinated by Girl Scouts of North East Ohio in partnership with The President’s Office, The Division of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion, and The College of Arts & Sciences at Kent State University.
