With more than 95 percent of Girl Scouts’ “work force” comprised of the volunteers who directly interact with girls or indirectly offer support behind-the-scenes, we believe that a consistent yet flexible system for managing volunteers is vital to the organization’s success. The Volunteer Management System, the Girl Scout service-delivery design, helps us attract, support, and retain the needed volunteers based on expertise, skills, interests, and life experience.
The system does this by offering:
- Flexible participation options, from single events to year-long opportunities
- Easier, simpler entry into volunteer positions, which includes matching volunteers’ interests and skills with the appropriate opportunities
- Efficient and innovative ways to prepare, support, and recognize volunteers
The Volunteer Management System as depicted below promotes national consistency while meeting the needs of a growing variety of volunteer types and positions.
Established in Oct. 2012, the Volunteer Development Department is responsible for overseeing the functions of volunteer management and support throughout the council. While one or two volunteer-management staff members certainly cannot perform each task and process within the Volunteer Management System, we have the skills and experiences to outline and oversee policies and processes, as well as provide the tools and support needed to manage and support volunteers successfully.
