FAQ

What is the FirstEnergy Girl Power patch program?

The FirstEnergy Girl Power patch program is presented in partnership with the FirstEnergy Foundation. These STEM programs put an electric spin on our Girl Scout badges and Journeys.

What are the options for completing the FirstEnergy Girl Power patch program?

Option 1: Girl Power Virtual Program – This option is conducted on Zoom by GSNEO STEM program facilitators. The program will meet on 4 days in the week, Monday through Thursday, with each session lasting 2 hours. Sessions are either 3:30-5:30pm or 6-8pm depending on the program and the week.  The zoom link and a list of supplies needed for daily program activities will be sent via email a few days before the start of the program.

Sample Girl Power Virtual Program schedule:

Monday             2-hour live virtual session via Zoom, 3:30-5:30pm
Tuesday             2-hour live virtual session via Zoom, 3:30-5:30pm
Wednesday       2-hour live virtual session via Zoom, 3:30-5:30pm
Thursday           2-hour live virtual session via Zoom, 3:30-5:30pm

Option 2: Girl Power On Your Own – Complete the Journey or badge and Girl Power activities on your own schedule using videos recorded by GSNEO STEM program facilitators to guide you.  Video instruction and activity supply lists will be posted on the FirstEnergy Girl Power page at gsneo.org.  To request your badge and patch, complete the jot form using the link provided.

Option 3: Girl Power Box Kit – Order a box kit with instructions and supplies to complete the activities on your own.  Some readily available household supplies will not be included in the kit and girls will need to secure these at home.  The kits will include instructions for badge requirements with additional Girl Power activities.  Box kits will be available for Daisy, Brownie, Junior and Cadette age levels.  Both the Girl Scout badge and the FirstEnergy Girl Power patch are included in this kit.  There is a fee to purchase this option.

How do I earn the FirstEnergy Girl Power patch?

Complete any of the FirstEnergy program options to earn the patch – virtual, on your own, or in-person activities and events when they are available.

Who will lead the FirstEnergy Girl Power virtual sessions?

Each virtual session will be held live on Zoom and will be facilitated by GSNEO STEM program facilitator staff.

What will the virtual Zoom session consist of?

GSNEO STEM program facilitators will send a Zoom invitation and password to the email address used when registering for the virtual program.  Zoom invitations include the start time of the session.  Girls will log into the meeting and complete the experiments and activities along with other girls in the session.  Girls will need to gather supplies for the sessions in advance of the Zoom meeting.

Will my girl earn any badges?

Yes, your girl will work toward the completion of a badge or Journey depending on the program. When girls have completed the badge or Journey requirements (including a Take Action project for Journeys), complete the badge request form and the badge or Journey award and Girl Power patch will be sent in the mail to the girl.

Does my Girl Scout require a chaperone in order to participate?

Adults can assist their Girl Scout with tasks that GSNEO STEM program facilitators will be leading live on Zoom. Girls will need supervision and assistance with activities that include electricity and energy (i.e. boiling water, matches, etc).

What technology does any camper need to access to in order to participate in the FirstEnergy Girl Power Program?

Girls must have access to reliable internet and a computer or mobile device with a microphone and a camera to participate in the Zoom sessions. Girls must have a current email address (either their own or a household caregiver’s) that can be checked daily during the week of programming.

What additional supplies does my camper need in order to participate in FirstEnergy Girl Power?

A list of general supplies will be emailed to the girl before her week of STEM sessions begin.  Girls should have their supplies gathered and ready for the first session on Monday.

How will the STEM staff stay in touch with my Girl Scout during the program?

Email reminders and further instructions will be sent a few days before the session begins, as well as during the week the program is in session.

What do I do after I register my camper for a FirstEnergy Girl Power Virtual program?

Lastly, keep an eye on your email for more details, information, and Zoom invitations from GSNEO STEM program facilitators.

Complete the Girl Power patch request form and the award and patch will be sent to the girl.
