Board Development Committee

Members of the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio (GSNEO) Board Development Committee assume responsibility for the identification and cultivation of a diverse candidate pool ensuring that GSNEO is led by dynamic individuals with the skills, influence, and experience necessary to carry out the Council’s strategic priorities. Committee members pledge to support the vision and mission of GSNEO by maintaining a working knowledge of the Council’s needs in terms of Board orientation, education, assessment, and succession planning.


The mission of Girl Scouts of North East Ohio is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.


Girl Scouts of North East Ohio will be the organization of choice of girls and recognized by the community as the best model for leadership development for girls and women.

Major Responsibility
  • Recruit, review, and confirm the qualifications of candidates for elected position in the Council.
  • Provide to the General Assembly a slate of one (1) candidate for each position to be elected, including officers, Directors-at-Large, Girl Directors-at-Large, Board Development Committee members, and delegates and alternates to the National Council of Girl Scouts of the United States of America.
  •  In conjunction with the Board of Directors, develop the following:
    • Board orientation and education materials
    • Board development materials
    • Methods for identifying needed skills and talents for the Board of Directors and committees
    • Methods for succession planning
    • Board annual self-assessment materials
  • Conduct Board orientation and development training sessions as needed and/or as directed by the Board of Directors.
  • Serve as a voting member of the GSNEO General Assembly body.
  • Conduct an annual review of the Council’s Bylaws.
  • Promote the organization.

Members of the committee share these responsibilities while acting in the interest of Girl Scouts of North East Ohio. Each member is expected to make recommendations based on his or her experience and vantage point in the community.

Length of Term

Two (2) years, which may be renewed up to a maximum of two (2) consecutive terms. The term commences at the close of the Annual Meeting.

Meetings and Time Commitment
  • New Member Orientation – 1.5-hour time commitment
  • Regular Committee Meetings: The committee meets an average of nine (9) times per year, depending on work level.
  • Annual Meeting – Held in the spring.
  • Annual Council Fundraiser – GSNEO sponsors numerous fundraising events throughout the eighteen (18) county footprint. Committee members are encouraged to support all fundraising events as ability allows.
Financial Expectations
  • Become a member of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.
    • Annually - $25
    • Lifetime - $400 (encouraged)
  • Financial supporter of GSNEO at a personal giving level that is significant to the committee member (recommended $100 minimum)
  • Travel and expenses at individual’s expense.
Non-Financial Expectations
  • Be alert to GSNEO related concerns that can be addressed by GSNEO mission, objectives, and programs.
  • Communicate and promote GSNEO mission and programs to the community.
  • Adherence to the policies and procedures of the GSNEO Board of Directors.
  • Compliance with GSNEO’s Conflict of Interest Policy.
