Girl Scouts of North East Ohio (GSNEO) announced funding included in the 135th Ohio General Assembly’s capital budget bill, House Bill 2, for two of its camp properties for infrastructure improvements. Camp Timberlane in Wakeman, Ohio received $600,000 and Camp Sugarbush in Kinsman, Ohio received $300,00 in the bill.
GSNEO’s Camp Timberlane is located on 324 acres in Erie County and utilized by approximately 5,000 individuals annually. State funding included in House Bill 2 will help upgrade camp security and access control, improve the Camp’s water activity access, upgrade the Camp’s target range for three-season-plus use, and increase camping capacity.
“I was pleased to work with the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio to secure $600,000 in state funding for the Camp Timberlane Infrastructure Improvements project in the One Time Strategic Community Investment Fund,” said State Senator Nathan Manning (R-N. Ridgeville). “This funding will allow GSNEO to increase the number of campers served as well as the safety, extent, and quality of their outdoor activities, which is so important for our region’s youth.”
“Camp Timberlane is a wonderful asset to our region and to the youth it serves, and the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio are doing an excellent job of ensuring the availability and safety of outdoor recreation, education, and camping experiences in northern Ohio,” said State Representative Dick Stein (R-Norwalk). “I was delighted to help secure this important funding for infrastructure improvements to Camp Timberlane.”
GSNEO’s Camp Sugarbush encompasses nearly 200 acres of natural space in Trumbull County and serves approximately 1,600 youth and volunteers each year with its facilities. State funding will help improve safety, public access, and environmental stabilization at the camp.
“Exposing youth to the important activities offered at the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio’s Camp Sugarbush, such as water safety, boating, archery, outdoor, and camping skills, is critical,” said State Senator Sandra O’Brien (R-Ashtabula). “I was delighted to help secure funding to help upgrade the infrastructure at Camp Sugarbush.”
“The Camp Sugarbush Infrastructure Improvements project will allow more girls to attend the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio’s camp in my district to benefit from programming at the Camp, and I’m thrilled I could help secure this funding in the state capital budget,” said State Representative Mike Loychik (R-Bazetta).
“I’m proud to have worked to secure funding for Camp Sugarbush,” said State Representative Nick Santucci (R- Howland Twp.). “These funds will help create more opportunities for our young people to learn valuable life skills and make lifelong friendships.”
“We appreciate the ongoing partnership of our state legislators and Governor DeWine in support of the 19,000 girls and 9,000 volunteers involved in the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio across our 18-county footprint,” said Jane Christyson, CEO of Girls Scouts of North East Ohio. “GSNEO is preparing girls to address and meet the unique challenges of today and tomorrow by fostering courage, confidence, and character to make the world a better place and by cultivating an uplifting, supportive environment for the girls we serve. Our camps are a critical part of achieving those goals, and we are grateful to the General Assembly and the Governor for their support in improving the infrastructure of these regional assets.”
