Nomination Process

National and Council Recognitions

The Appreciation Pin was instituted in 1976 by GSUSA. The Appreciation Pin recognizes an individual’s exemplary service in support of delivering the GSLE with impact within one geographic area of service, beyond a troop level, within Girl Scouting.
The Gratitude Pin can be awarded to any adult volunteer who has previously earned the Appreciation Pin. Candidates must continue to provide exemplary service in support of delivering the Girl Scout Leadership Experience with impact within at least one geographic area of service beyond the troop level within Girl Scouts.
The Honor Pin recognizes an individual’s exemplary service in support of delivering the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, which has had measurable impact on two or more geographic areas of service, allowing the council to reach and surpass its mission-delivery goals.
The Thanks Badge was instituted in 1912 by GSUSA. The Thanks Badge honors an individual whose ongoing commitment, leadership, and service have had an exceptional, measurable impact on meeting the mission-delivery goals and priorities of the entire council or the entire Girl Scout Movement.
Thanks Badge II was instituted in 1987 by GSUSA. The Thanks Badge II honors a previous Thanks Badge award recipient who has continued to provide exemplary service in a leadership role which resulted in a measurable impact benefiting the entire Girl Scout Movement.
Forever Green is a GSNEO created award and was implemented in 2012 by the Volunteer Recognition Committee. It may be presented to Volunteers who are nominated after receiving the Thanks Badge and Thanks Badge II. This award honors their continued exemplary service.
The Girl Scouts of North East Ohio Award was implemented in 2018 by the Volunteer Recognition Committee. The award recognizes any individual, or group, whose outstanding service to a Council-wide assignment, committee, or whose service and dedication impacts the success and development of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience for GSNEO. This award is appropriate for individuals or groups who have impacted on the council as a whole and does not have the prerequisite of receiving other awards first.

Service Unit Level Awards

The Volunteer of Excellence Award was instituted in 2013 by GSUSA, replacing the Outstanding Volunteer Award. It is awarded to an adult in a position other than leader, or in addition to leader, whose outstanding service benefits the troop, service unit, or association. Traditionally awards to other troop committee members. Each Service Unit receives one pin per membership year for free but an endorsement must be filed in order to receive it. If the unit has more than 100 volunteers, the unit can receive two pins for free. Additional pins can be purchased for a fee by the Unit. If the Service Unit does not have a team, the Volunteer Support and Services staff of GSNEO can issue these pins for the volunteers.
The Outstanding Leader Pin, originally developed by GSUSA in 1987 and adapted by GSNEO in 2020, is given to a primary troop volunteer (Troop Leader or Troop Admin) at the service unit level. It recognizes leadership skills that include good communication and membership development.

Developed by the GSNEO Volunteer Recognition Pin in 2025, this pin is a special way to say thanks to the newest Volunteers to Girl Scouts. This can be awarded to Volunteers who have completed their first year in troop leadership, and is issued by the local Service Unit Team.

If the Service Unit does not have a team, the Volunteer Support and Services staff of GSNEO can issue these pins for eligible volunteers.
